Hello Pirate Family and Happy Winterfest Friday!

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the frustrations some have shared with me regarding this morning’s conditions and the decision to keep school open. I understand those concerns. I also want to be clear that the number of snow days remaining or the possibility of extending the school year, never factor into my decision-making.

This winter has been challenging in many ways, particularly with the timing of snowfall and the wide variation in conditions reported across the county and surrounding areas. Forecasts over the past few days called for snow both yesterday and today, with expected totals of 1–3 inches. When I assessed conditions at 5:30 a.m., the snow had just begun to fall. While some areas in Livingston County were reporting traces of freezing rain, we were not experiencing that locally. Between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m., I was outside continually monitoring precipitation and receiving firsthand reports on road conditions. At that time, there was no freezing rain and only a few reports of slick spots, which prompted my message of caution.

We knew roads could become tricky with the expected early morning snowfall, but we were confident our buses could operate safely and that, with everyone driving carefully, we could remain open for the day, especially with the snow forecasted to stop by mid-morning.

Days like today are difficult because timing plays such a significant role, often more than the total amount of snow. That has been a pattern this winter, with frequent light snowfall creating slippery conditions during both morning and evening commutes. I also want to reiterate that parents always have the right to decide what is best and safest for their child(ren). At the same time, our buses are available and remain among the safest vehicles on the road, particularly in snowy conditions, as they are designed and operated with safety as the top priority.

I truly respect and understand the feelings that have been shared. As both a parent and a superintendent, I know driving in these conditions can create anxiety and worry. Even when opinions differ, please know that the safety of our students, and my own children, is always the number one factor in every decision I make.

As we head into the weekend, our PCHS students will be celebrating Winterfest tonight with our annual varsity basketball games against Jackson. The girls tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:00 p.m. We encourage you to come out, cheer on our Pirates, and enjoy the always-popular “Guy-Girls Dance” during halftime. GO PIRATES!! 🏴‍☠️🏀

Our amazing Leadership/Link Crew Class at PCHS is sponsoring another "Parent's Night Out" on Friday, Feb. 20th from 5pm - 8pm. This team of aspiring leaders would love to spend a few hours playing with and entertaining your child(ren) while you grab a bite to eat with a loved one, get a little shopping done or just go back home to take an undisturbed nap! It's an exciting weekend of sports as we have the Super Bowl on Sunday and the opening of the Winter Olympic Games tonight and once again, we will be sending both our Pirate and National pride all the way to Italy for our own Pinckney Pirate, Jake Vedder, with the Border Cross races starting next Thursday, Feb. 12. GO JAKE, GO USA AND GO PIRATES!! 🏴‍☠️🇺🇸🏴‍☠️🇺🇸

Have a great weekend!
