Hello Pirates,

Although I am not yet able to share the entire 2026-27 school calendar as we continue to collaborate with our teacher's union as we work to negotiate a new bargaining agreement, I am able to share the official first day of school that was announced during last night's board meeting. The first day of school for the 2026-27 school year will be Monday, August 24, 2026. This date is consistent with previous school years, however, we understand this is a slight change, as it is two weeks before Labor Day, unlike previous years when we started one week prior to Labor Day.

This modification is necessary because Labor Day falls very late this year (and will again in 2027-28), landing on September 7. Two primary factors greatly influenced this decision and are explained below:

1. Pinckney Community High School's CTE (Career Technical Education) program is part of a county-wide consortium in partnership with Fowlerville, Howell, Hartland and Brighton. Students from all five schools attend classes like robotics, welding, construction, nursing, and automotive at neighboring schools, including here in Pinckney. Although our starting dates are not currently aligned in the county, we are working to minimize the impacts on these students by having our first days as close to one another as possible and starting on August 24 accomplishes this.

2. The academic semesters for both Pathfinder and the High School now mirror those of post-secondary universities/colleges, ending before the holiday break so students can take exams in December. Although the number of days per semester is not exactly equal, starting on August 24 minimizes the gap between the first and second semesters.

Although not a primary factor, we prefer ending school during the first week of June rather than the second or even third week. Research clearly shows that learning can be maximized at the beginning of the year when students are excited and ready to return. The longer school extends past Memorial Day into June, the more difficult it becomes to sustain meaningful learning. This is one of the reasons why a couple of our Livingston County partners have been intentional in ending their school year by Memorial Day.

We will definitely release the entire calendar once we are able, but for now, I will share the county common calendar that contains the scheduled holiday and spring breaks for the upcoming school years.

Thank you and GO PIRATES!!
