Hello Pirates and Happy "Do you need to buy a new Mattress?" Friday!

Let's be honest, it's hard to not be aware of the upcoming Mattress Sale occurring tomorrow at the Pathfinder Complex Gym from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., given the number of social media posts, emails and signs posted at every school. The good news is that this is my last reminder (well, maybe last) 😉! Given that the amazing weather we had this week is not expected to continue this weekend (go figure!), it may be a good day to stop in and see us and maybe, just maybe, consider purchasing a brand new mattress!

I can honestly say, today, I experienced one of the proudest moments of my thirteen years as superintendent. I watched with tears as our high school and Pathfinder students presented five skits detailing the challenges facing middle school students, ranging from balancing the demands of a busy schedule, to the negative self-talk, and the fear of being judged or bullied for their skin color, religion, or academic performance. These amazingly talented and brave students helped to create, write and perform these skits under the guidance and mentorship of PCS parent and school board vice-president, Gayle Hurn, who we couldn't be more thankful for her service and commitment to our students and district.
This work is a product of our Community Engagement Committee, which started approximately 18 months ago to help engage our broader community—including staff, parents and students—to embrace the mission of creating a community founded in respect, understanding and empathy for all. The photos below do not do justice in displaying the impact these students had on our Pathfinder 7th & 8th graders, but I encourage you to watch the two videos that I will post as a follow up which will provide some insight and for those parents who have a 7th or 8th grader at Pathfinder, I encourage you to ask your student about what they saw and heard today.

Unspoken Skit:
A Letter to my 7th Grade Self Skit:

Middle school can be a very challenging time in the lives of our kids and as they say, it truly takes a village to help guide our kids in understanding the value in being kind, positive, empathetic, brave, forgiving and respectful. I believe the student voices that were shared today can make a bigger impact on our culture, community and the individual lives of our students than any adult as everything said, written and presented was coming directly from their perspective. What was even more telling is that the students watching this (over 300), listened so intently and supported their peers with positive comments and encouragement. When walking down the hall after, I heard several students say that "This was the best thing they have ever seen" and that "I wish all of our classes were like this!" and trust me, I couldn't agree more!
Immediately following the presentation, a group of adults & teachers, including myself, facilitated small group discussions to give our students the opportunity to reflect on what they saw and more importantly, how it related to them personally and once again, our students were amazing in sharing their thoughts and perspectives, being fully transparent and honest. I couldn't be more proud to call myself a Pinckney Pirate than I am today.

What a great experience our Navigator 5th graders had this week at camp! They enjoyed learning & playing outdoors, spending time just being "kids" without technology and spending quality time with their peers and teachers. Thank you to our staff and parents who spent the past three days taking great care of our kiddos; we appreciate you! GO PIRATES!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend and as always, GO PIRATES!!
