Hello Pirate Families and Happy Friday!

As many of you know, I have spent this past week with 105 of our amazing Pathfinder 8th grade students on their Washington DC trip (actually writing this email on the bus ride home) as they had the opportunity to learn first hand the history they have been exposed to in the classroom. Throughout this week, I have been humbled, encouraged and filled with immense pride by the response of our students, the comments I heard, the tears shed (tears of respect and compassion) and the appreciation for the life they have been given which has only been made possible by the sacrifices  made by those that came before them.

I am most proud of the human touch our students provided to many of the veterans we came in contact with when visiting the memorials. Not only did they say "Thank you" to countless veterans passing by, but during our visit to the Air Force Memorial, our students honored the Michigan, Upper Peninsula Honor Flight Chapter by clapping our national heroes out as they headed back home to Michigan. I am so proud of our students as they spent so much time talking to these veterans, who shared their praise in how respectful, caring and attentive our students were compared to other schools present. We should be so proud as a district and community to be raising and nurturing young people who have a strong sense of national pride and an appreciation for those who have given so much.

At last week's Board of Education meeting, our Board approved a three year extension with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department to continue the services of Deputy Jeremy Gwinn. He has become an invaluable resource for our students, staff, district and community and we so blessed to have him as part of our Pirate family!

This past Tuesday, we celebrated National Therapy Dog Appreciation day and we are excited to announce that our fifth and final dog, Jack, will be joining us next Thursday! We can't say "Thank you" enough for the community support we have received that has made reaching our goal of obtaining five dogs possible!

I would like to wish our seniors a happy, fun and safe prom on Saturday night as they celebrate the relationships and memories they have created together over the years as they are just one month away from graduation.

The word many of our students used this week when speaking with veterans is "Grateful" and the time I have been given during my time in DC with my fellow Pirates reminds me how grateful and fortunate I am to lead and serve our students, staff and community. Thank you for your support and as always, GO PIRATES!!

Rick Todd
