Hello Stripe team,

We operate a SaaS platform that uses Stripe as its payment processor: we use a platform account, Stripe Connect for sellers (onboarded via Connect OAuth), and Stripe.js to tokenize cards for online payments.

While reviewing your documentation and running tests, we noticed what appears to be conflicting guidance on Interac in online card flows, and we would appreciate official clarification.

What we are seeing

  • Your Cards documentation lists Interac as a supported card brand, which suggests Interac may be usable in online card payments.
  • Your Payment methods overview describes Interac as in-person only, which creates uncertainty about online acceptance and tokenization.

Questions

  1. Is Stripe.js officially supported for tokenizing Interac-branded debit cards in a standard online card payment flow?
  2. For Interac (or Interac-branded) cards processed as cards online, are there limitations regarding:
    • SetupIntents (save card for later use), and
    • Manual capture / authorization holds?
  3. For Canadian Stripe accounts, is Interac in this online card context enabled by default, or does it require special enablementproduct eligibility, or review?

Our goal

We want our checkout to serve Canadian debit customers accurately and to avoid implying full online Interac tokenization support if it is not generally available.

Thank you for any clarification or pointers to the authoritative documentation.

Best regards,
Jacob

Hello,

Interac support can be complex to grasp and I agree our public docs are quite vague here. A large portion of Interac cards are co-branded with Visa or Mastercard which means they can be used for online payments already. For in-person payments, Interac cards (co-branded or not) are accepted but require you to support it properly in your integration which is in this doc.

Finally, we also have a feature to support Interac cards that aren't co-branded today and that was announced on Interac's website here [2]. This does require some approval on our end though so if you wanted access to it you need to ask for access by emailing debit-wa...@stripe.com directly. This has also some limitations around support for Connect platforms.

Sorry this is a bit messy/confusing but hopefully that gives you enough to figure out next steps by either emailing that address or reaching out to our support team at https://support.stripe.com/contact to discuss this further.

Best,
Remi
