Hi all,

I know there is already a functionality in stripe to update the expiry date of a card source automatically  (https://support.stripe.com/questions/how-can-i-keep-customer-card-details-up-to-date). However it is dependent on the card issuers and is probably region specific.

According to the doc, it is supported in these regions: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland

In Australia, for example, it does not seem to be supported. I have charges declined due to expired cards.

That's why I would like to remind the customers that their cards are going to expire (maybe a month before the expiry date) and prompt them to update card information.

I plan to retrieve the expire dates from stripe and save to my data store. Then organise email notification accordingly.

Is there anyway I can detect if 'smarter saved card' feature is enabled for a particular card? If so I can skip sending email to the customer.

Is there any best practice anyone may want to share? For example, is there any concern in regard to saving the expiry date outside of stripe? Should I save the card source id along with the date? Or the 'last4' of the card?

Cheers

We use Bare Metrics https://baremetrics.com/dunning to send out Dunning emails for active subscriptions which remind people to update their cards when the expiry is near or has past.

You could program it yourself but I think thats a good place to start.

The one part you have to build on your own though if you use Bare Metrics is a form to capture the updated credit card details and then update Stripe with that new card token.
