Hello everyone,

I'm working on preparing P4's organization application to participate in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2024 on P4 TST's delegation. One important part of the application is to prepare a pool of potential mentors from the community. So I'm reaching out to all of you for help.

If you:
  • Have experience working on some https://github.com/p4lang projects before.
  • Are passionate about mentoring a potential new contributor to these P4 projects.
  • Can commit to mentor responsibilities during the GSoC 2024 period (main commitments are expected from June to August, similar to a normal summer internship).
  • Having a potential GSoC project idea is a plus, but not required.
Then you are welcome to sign up to the GSoC mentor pool! If you decided to do so, here are the next steps:
  • Reach out to me in private to sign up for the mentor pool. Please do so before Feb 5 18:00 UTC (= Feb 5 10:00 PST, 13:00 EST), as the deadline for GSoC org application is Feb 6 18:00 UTC, and we need some time to finalize the application.
  • We'll work together on preparing the initial project ideas list.
  • Wait until Feb 21 to see if P4 org is selected for GSoC 2024.
  • If we are selected, we'll work together in preparing for the next phase.
If you can not make the full mentor commitment yet, but think you can help in some way, also let me know! We can likely use your help.

If you have any questions to clarify, feel free to reply to this thread.

I'm looking forward to working with you and making this happen.

Thanks!
Bili

Based on the inquiries so far, I'd like to make some further clarifications:
  • The main goal of the GSoC program is to help bring new long-term contributors to open source communities (like us).
  • As to mentor eligibility:
    • Mentors should be active community members of our open source projects.
  • As to typical mentor responsibilities, here's a more concrete example:
    • Communicate with the GSoC contributors 2-3 times a week.
    • Expect to spend anywhere from 2-4 hours a week working with the contributors (including code reviews and all kinds of communications).
      • Some weeks could be more and some less. Usually the first few weeks will require more time.
    • Complete a midterm and a final evaluation.
Finally, some links to learn more about GSoC:
Thanks for your time!

Thanks to everyone who has offered to help! Now we have a great mentor pool assembled for the GSoC application, and are not looking for more mentors.

Best regards,
Bili
