Sorry for the delayed response.
The next release of Mender (due in a few months) will support many types
of application updates (e.g. package-based, files) through update modules.
This should alleviate most bandwidth constraints, with a tradeoff
against potential inconsistency; though you can occasionally deploy full
image updates in-between the application updates to mitigate.
Pure delta updates (difference between two root file system images) is
on the roadmap as well, however it does require several larger features
to ensure it is done correctly (e.g. deployment ordering), so it may
take a while. This full version might also be offered as a commercial
service/value add.
So bottom line is: yes, delta updates will be supported and we do not
have an ETA at the moment.
