Overview:

Peninsula Counseling and Consulting, Inc. provides behavioral health services to individuals and families who are impacted by mental health symptoms, and to professionals and organizations that serve them.  Serving the community since 2016, the organization strives to help destigmatize mental health and co-occurring disorders, provide education and therapeutic support to those impacted through evidence-based practices.  Peninsula Counseling and Consulting assists those to improve the quality of their life through a variety of services, including:  therapy, case management, consultation, clinical supervision, and screening and assessment.  The services are eclectic, and uniquely tailored to the individual’s needs and treatment goals.


Responsibilities:


  • Meet with individuals and family members in the community.

  • Identify how clients are functioning, and monitor changes in their behavior (e.g., mood, energy level, anxiety, thinking or beliefs, altered mental status, substance impairment) and overall ability to function in their environment.

  • Assess for the client’s ability to care for their basic needs, and triage as clinically indicated. 

  • Assess for and intervene regarding concerning behaviors (e.g., thoughts of self-harm, harm to others, inability to care for food, clothing, shelter, suspected abuse/neglect, environmental safety hazards).

  • Engage in the teaching of social skills through modeling and role-playing.  

  • Perform reality-testing, problem-solving, and solution-focused interventions.

  • Teach and model skills related to:  technology, money management, healthy living, social skills, assertiveness, boundaries, and conflict resolution.

  • Identify, encourage, and facilitate leisure and recreation opportunities in the community to increase client’s autonomy.

  • Identify housing options, including congregate living resources.

  • Assist with scheduling and transportation to and from appointments.

  • Assist with benefit acquisition and maintenance (e.g., Cal Fresh, SSI, SSDI, Medi-Cal, IHSS, fiduciary).

  • Set boundaries, and redirect clients.

  • Observe clients take medication.

  • Develop, follow, and update treatment plan.

  • Provide linkage to community resources.

  • Liaise with stakeholders (e.g., family, friends, medical and mental health providers).

  • Share clinical observations with supervisor.

  • Document interactions in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • Complete relevant trainings.

  • And duties to be assigned.


Location of the Work:

  • Community (e.g., home, congregate settings)

  • Office

  • Off-site office location (with ability to confidentially and privately perform functions)

  • Advanced knowledge of clinical interventions related to persons with mental health and co-occurring disorders.

  • Empathy and compassion for clients.

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical behavioral health practices and standards of care.

  • Advocacy.

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 

  • Continuously maintain privacy, confidentiality, and HIPAA standards.

  • Exude cultural competence and humility; passion for working with marginalized populations (e.g., persons with severe and persistent mental illness, addiction, LGBTQIA+).


Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in a human services related field (e.g., psychology, social worker, counseling).

  • Licensed to independently practice psychotherapy in the state of California (e.g., LMFT, LPCC, LCSW, PsyD/PhD).

  • At least 5 years of experience working with persons who experience serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders.

  • Proficient in the use of technology, including Internet navigation, E.H.R. 

  • Able to perform job functions independently, including decision-making related to urgent/emergent resources and evaluating for higher levels of care.

  • Valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Access to and comfort in use of personal vehicle to perform job functions.

  • Valid vehicle insurance with policy minimums of $30,000 for injury/death to one person; $60,000 for injury/death to more than one person; $15,000 for damage to property.

  • Legally able to work in the U.S.
