Subject: Help Open a Math Library for Young Mathematicians in UC Berkeley -- Berkeley Math Circle
To: musa.b...@gmail.com, ucb...@gmail.com

Dear Math Undergraduates at UC Berkeley,

My name is Harry Main-Luu, current assistant of the Berkeley Math Circle.
This year is our 20th anniversary year, and I am planning a project to open a math library for Berkeley Math Circle students in the office of Evans 714 from all the books donated to us throughout the years.

I am hoping that I could recruit a few math enthusiasts to help sort these books and inventory them into an excel sheet, or perhaps a better software if possible.

The Berkeley Math Circle is an after school program that enriches math education of about 500 young students of all backgrounds and demographics in the Bay Area. We keep our cost extremely low and even offer financial aid to students of needs with the goal to reach as many students as possible, by minimizing administrative costs and devoting most of our resources to the academic quality of the program.

Once open, the library will be free of charge for any enrolled Berkeley Math Circle students.

Details:
  • Who: We are looking for any math enthusiasts of all college years, although strong math background may help you quickly categorize the books.
  • What: The books we have are mostly undergraduate level books, which we will need Math enthusiasts to help flip through and categorize to shelf. Some are even currently used as textbooks at UC Berkeley.
  • Where: All the books are already in the office Evans 714. There will be very minimal (if any) physical labor.
  • When: You can come any portion of the following:
    • Spring Break Saturday 3/31: 3-8pm.
    • Sunday 4/1 10am-5pm.
  • I will bring some refreshments (pizzas and sodas) - contingent upon my budget.
This volunteering opportunity will not only look good on your resume but will also enrich the math education of many more generations to come. Your support will help found one of the first free math libraries for middle school and high school students in the area (if not the country - though I do not have the data to back this up).

If you would like to be part of this fun day of reading and sorting math texts, please sign up using this Google Form.

You will be contacted once we finalize the logistics of the event.

Due to severe lack of resources to monitor the email traffic, please refrain from sending email inquiries to Berkeley Math Circle staff members.

I am more than happy to answer your questions in Evans 714 on Tuesdays 5:15-5:45pm, 6:45-7:45pm.

Best,
-- Harry Main-Luu
