Sorry about the delay, I was busy watching a popular game of incompleteness and counting in Z_4. With the Eagles' win, here are your weekly announcements:
This week's speaker is one of our own officers, Sung Hyup Lee, and the title is "How to Count Like a Logician". The abstract is below:
Ramsey's theorem provides a generalisation of the classic pigeonhole principle. This aspect of 'infinitary combinatorics', which tells us when certain homogeneity properties hold given certain conditions, has lent itself naturally to a slew of results in logic and the foundations of mathematics. In this talk, I plan to give a brief and friendly survey of this interaction.
e Day Celebration: Wednesday, 2/7/18, 6:30pm (1015 Evans)
The e Day of the Century is this Wednesday! Every hundred years, on the seventh day of the second month of the eighteenth year, an approximation of
e is formed: 2.718. Come join us for an
e-themed night of pizza, baked goods, balloon transcendental numbers, and a showing of ‘The Great
e vs. π Debate'. WiM will be bringing us baked goods. To build up the suspense, please participate in our
poll to determine which number is better. The results will be revealed at Wednesday's event. Share with your fellow math enthusiasts!
Summer Research Panel: Thursday, February 8, 7pm (1015 Evans)
Berkeley Connect and MUSA are coming together to host a panel on summer research, specifically programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). The panel will discuss mathematical opportunities in the summer, including REUs, internships and others. On the panel will be David Uminsky, director of the Undergraduate Program at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute; Katie Crawford, a STEM-oriented counselor from the Career Center; Prof. Jeremy Lovejoy from our very own math department; and Eric Chen, a student who completed an REU last year. Food will be provided.
Cheap Snacks and Foodstuffs: MUSA Office, 938 Evans
As I mentioned at the first meeting, our office provides snacks to hungry, tired undergraduates (or other hungry people) at a low price. Visit the
office page at our website or come into our office to see what we have to offer. We accept cash (exact change preferred), card, and Venmo.
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship:
The SURF program is offering a new fellowship dedicated to math majors this coming summer. To be eligible, you must be a declared math major who is in good upper division standing. To apply, you must form a team of four people plus a faculty advisor and submit a research proposal by Thursday, February 22. If you complete the program, you will receive a stipend of $4500. Professor Olga Holtz is now accepting students for her team; her research interests are available on her
website. If you are interested in becoming a member of her team, please fill out
this form, and she will contact selected participants. You are also welcome to form a team yourself, but note that only one team will be selected for this new fellowship. Let us know if you need any assistance!
Women in Mathematics Infosession: Monday, February 5, 6pm (1015 Evans)
WiM is holding their semesterly informational meeting, welcoming new members and returning members. Come out and socialize with their awesome members, enjoy food, and learn about what WiM is all about this semester! As I've said before, MUSA and WiM often collaborate to bring all parts of the math community together. I encourage you to attend if you're interested!
Effective Altruists of Berkeley:
Please see attached flyer for more information about this group. One of our former officers, Brian Burks, is involved with it and I encourage you to check it out if you're interested!
Best,
Ryan Shaw
