Dear Jacobs Community,
This week's Jacobs newsletter is super-sized and has design opportunities that include several events happening *tomorrow* as well as summer programs and jobs that you can apply to.
We also invite you to help us with one of our own in-progress design projects: reimagining the Jacobs Student Welcome Center (SWC) on the first floor of Jacobs Hall. Read about all that and more below!
Best,
Amy
Fill out Jacobs Hall New Student Welcome Center Survey!
Join us in reimagining the Jacobs Student Welcome Center (SWC), which will occupy two spaces: the west entrance lobby and Room 103. The new welcome center will serve as an accessible, engaging place for students to get information, resources, and opportunities for exploring design and technology.
If you are a student at UC Berkeley, we would love to hear your input by filling out this quick survey by next Wednesday, March 15th. If you have any questions, reach out to Grisel Chavez.
*Tomorrow* Mar 2: Design Field Notes w/ Igor Galligo
Each semester, the Jacobs Design Field Notes speaker series invites a dynamic group of designers, artists, and academics in design-related fields to share their work and practice. Each talk is free and open to all students and members of the public. View the full speaker lineup here and subscribe to the Design Field Notes Google calendar here. This week's talk is:
AUTOMEDIA: For a grassroots media design revolution!
Igor Galligo / Visiting Researcher at UC Berkeley, Founder of Noödesign.org, Founder of Automedias.org
Igor Galligo is a French researcher in philosophy, media science, and design, who worked for several years with Bernard Stiegler at the Centre Pompidou, in Paris. In 2018, he founded
NOÖDESIGN.ORG, a think tank working on the relationship between digital devices and cognitive operations from the paradigm of general organology. In 2022, he founded
AUTOMEDIAS.ORG, a platform that brings together researchers, software engineers, and political media activists to design a new information production model, based on a contributory design process.
*Tomorrow* Mar 2: Get the BIG WIN from BIG GIVE!Many of you are probably aware that BIG GIVE — Berkeley's annual campus-wide fundraising blitz— is this Thursday, March 9th!
BIG GIVE is an all-hands opportunity to support Jacobs Institute's critical role enabling Berkeley students to experiment, push boundaries, and challenge convention to fuel new ideas. Contributions of any size are welcome and will directly support the institute’s courses, makerspaces, and programs.
What you may not know is that YOU CAN WIN if you give! Jacobs Institute will randomly choose one student donor to Jacobs' Big Give account to win a Jacobs Hall Maker Pass! So plan ahead to earmark one of your Big Give pledges for Jacobs Hall and get a chance to win win WIN!

In this workshop we will explore how modern fabrication technology puts the power in all our hands to fix and upgrade the items we own.
Berkeley Engineering Design Scholar summer research programThe
Berkeley Engineering Design Scholar Program is a 10-week summer undergraduate research program for UC Berkeley undergraduates. Each
Design Scholar is matched with a faculty advisor based on their interests, and conducts faculty-guided research in areas such as Engineering
Design,
Design Methodology, Human Computer Interaction, or Data-driven
Design. Benefits of the program include a $5000 stipend, exposure to academic research, a free summer
Maker Pass, and more.
The
Design Scholar program will be offered as an in-person, on-campus experience in summer 2023, starting June 5th and ending August 11th.
A select number of Design Scholars will also be able to participate in the Maker Launchpad as part of a combined summer learning experience.
The Design Scholar program is open to all continuing Berkeley undergraduate students in the College of Engineering, although freshmen are encouraged to wait until their sophomore or junior years to apply. Continuing Berkeley students outside of the College of Engineering with a track record of experience in design will also be considered. Student veterans, persons with disabilities, women, transfer students, and students of color are especially encouraged to apply.
