Dear Jacobs Community,

This week's Upcoming@Jacobs newsletter contains some reminders of events and opportunities that we shared last week, in case you missed them, as well as a reminder about today's Design Field Notes talk that was rescheduled from last week. Also, graduate students who are interested in being a GSI/Tutor for a DES INV course--we are accepting spring semester applications now.

Best,

Amy

SPRING 2023 ASE ROLES FOR DES INV COURSES
Each semester, the Jacobs Institute hires dedicated, knowledgeable graduate students to serve as academic student employees (ASEs) for the Design Innovation (DES INV) courses. Available roles range from graduate student instructors (GSIs), readers, and tutors, depending on the course. Applications for the spring 2023 course ASE roles are now open. More information about the available roles and instructions on how to apply are provided on the Jacobs website. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning immediately, until positions are filled--with the goal of filling all positions by November 7, 2022.

Please reference the FAQ at the end of the Jacobs ASE page for general information about Jacobs ASE hiring. Other questions that are not addressed in the FAQ can be directed to Aleta Martinez.

JACOBS HALL DROP-IN TOURS
Did you miss our back-to-school tours and open house? It’s not too late--our student staff offer weekly drop-in tours of the Jacobs makerspace and teaching studios throughout the academic year as well. Tours are open to members of the Berkeley community and general public, and are a useful way to learn more about our resources. The current schedule of tour dates and times can be found here. For other tour inquiries or groups larger than 5 people, please email jacobsi...@berkeley.edu.

JACOBS HAND TOOL LENDING LIBRARY SURVEY
The Tool Lending Library is a new service that allows members of the campus community to come to the Jacobs Hall pickup window and check-out tools from us, for free, for one or two weeks. As we build out this new offering, we could use your feedback! Tell us what you think we should have in stock to lend out by taking this 3-question survey. Thanks!

OCT 13: DESIGN FIELD NOTES w/ KARINA VAN SCHAARDENBURG
The Jacobs Design Field Notes speaker series invites a dynamic group of designers, artists, and academics in design-related fields to share their work and practice. This fall semester the series is held virtually on Thursdays 1-2pm. Each talk is free and open to all students and members of the public. View the full speaker lineup. This week's speaker event (rescheduled from last week) is:

OCT 14: BCDI Info/Q&A Session
Join us for a Zoom Information and Q&A Session on Friday, October 14th, 3-4pm, to learn more about the Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation and have your questions about fulfilling certificate requirements, Spring 2023 BCDI course list, Spring 2023 Phase I enrollment, future course availability, etc., answered by the BCDI Advisor.

RSVP for the BCDI Info Session
Zoom Link: https://berkeley.zoom.us/j/99237797761

*Zoom presentation will be recorded and distributed to the BCDI mailing list.
**During the Live Q&A, students can submit questions in the chat section of the Zoom presentation.

The Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation (BCDI) assumes that innovation does not come from just one area of study, but requires the integration of many modes of technology, knowledge, and thought. The cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental partnership between the College of Environmental Design, the College of Engineering, the Haas School of Business, and the College of Letters and Sciences Arts and Humanities Division hopes to guide undergraduate students across UC Berkeley’s campus to the critical need for design thinking, regardless of their major. For more information about BCDI, please visit our website at http://bcdi.berkeley.edu and/or email the BCDI Advisor, Tyshon Rogers with any questions at tro...@berkeley.edu.

Hello again,

One more thing that I should have included--the spring 2023 list of DES INV and Jacobs affiliated courses is now available on our website! More information below.

SPRING 2023 JACOBS COURSE LIST
A range of courses take place in Jacobs Hall. The Jacobs Institute’s expert instructors offer interdisciplinary Design Innovation (DES INV) courses, which include both lower-division entry points to design skills and project-based capstone experiences. Jacobs Hall also hosts affiliated courses from other departments and student-led DeCals that also explore design and contribute to our interdisciplinary community.

The Jacobs course page has now been updated for spring 2023 with DES INV courses and affiliated courses (DeCals have not yet been finalized but will be posted to the DeCal website when ready). For questions about enrollment in DES INV courses, please consult our course enrollment policies.
