The Jacobs Design Field Notes speaker series invites a dynamic group of designers, artists, and academics in design-related fields to share their work and practice. This fall semester the series is held virtually on Thursdays 1-2pm. Each talk is free and open to all students and members of the public. View the full speaker lineup. This week's speaker and topic are:

OCT 7: DEVILISH DECORATIONS: A GHASTLY LIFECASTING PRIMER
In this Halloween-themed workshop, Student Supervisor Esme and Design Specialist Adam will show you the basics of lifecasting, allowing you to reproduce fingers and hands as unsettling accoutrements for your goulish attire or spooky abode. All you need to bring are your eyes and ears… still attached, of course! **Note: this workshop is currently full, but you can join the short waitlist. Registration is open to all UC Berkeley students.**

Learn more about this workshop and how register on the Jacobs workshops page. This page also has information about other fun workshops coming up like Robodraw and Introduction to Mechanical Design; please note that these latter workshops are limited to Maker Pass holders due to equipment usage and being located in the makerspace.

OCT 8: JACOBS @ THE BERKELEY SHOWCASE

This Saturday, October 8th, the Jacobs Institute will be tabling at the UC Berkeley's Office of Undergraduate Admissions first-ever open house for prospective students.

This opportunity is open to both prospective first-year and transfer students; if you have younger family members or friends who are interested in Berkeley and design, invite them to register for the event and stop by the Jacobs table.

Civic Tech 101 / UX Design Job Hunt Tips & Tricks
Monday, October 10, 5:30-6:30pm in Jacobs Hall 310

Curious about what it's like to work in design in civic tech and the path it takes to get there? Come join this casual conversation with Karen Chou (she/her), a UX Designer at Code for America with a previous background working in tech startups. She'll also give some really practical tips to help you in your job hunt. Note: You don't need to be pursuing a career in UX design to attend this talk! The information will be useful for anyone who wants to enter the tech industry in a variety of roles (ex: Service Design, UX Content Design, UX Research, Product Management).

OCT 14: BCDI Info/Q&A Session
Join us for a Zoom Information and Q&A Session on Friday, October 14th, 3-4pm, to learn more about the Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation and have your questions about fulfilling certificate requirements, Spring 2023 BCDI course list, Spring 2023 Phase I enrollment, future course availability, etc., answered by the BCDI Advisor.

RSVP for the BCDI Info Session
Zoom Link: https://berkeley.zoom.us/j/99237797761

*Zoom presentation will be recorded and distributed to the BCDI mailing list.
**During the Live Q&A, students can submit questions in the chat section of the Zoom presentation.

The Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation (BCDI) assumes that innovation does not come from just one area of study, but requires the integration of many modes of technology, knowledge, and thought. The cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental partnership between the College of Environmental Design, the College of Engineering, the Haas School of Business, and the College of Letters and Sciences Arts and Humanities Division hopes to guide undergraduate students across UC Berkeley’s campus to the critical need for design thinking, regardless of their major. For more information about BCDI, please visit our website at http://bcdi.berkeley.edu and/or email the BCDI Advisor, Tyshon Rogers with any questions at tro...@berkeley.edu.

JACOBS HALL DROP-IN TOURS
Did you miss our back-to-school tours and open house? It’s not too late--our student staff offer weekly drop-in tours of the Jacobs makerspace and teaching studios throughout the academic year as well. Tours are open to members of the Berkeley community and general public, and are a useful way to learn more about our resources. The current schedule of tour dates and times can be found here. For other tour inquiries or groups larger than 5 people, please email jacobsi...@berkeley.edu.

JACOBS HAND TOOL LENDING LIBRARY SURVEY
The Tool Lending Library is a new service that allows members of the campus community to come to the Jacobs Hall pickup window and check-out tools from us, for free, for one or two weeks.

As we build out this new offering, we could use your feedback! Tell us what you think we should have in stock to lend out by taking this 3-question survey. Thanks!

Best,
