Dear Jacobs Community,
This week's newsletter has a few very timely event opportunities--one event at lunchtime today and one application due tonight to join the Storyblok Charrette, in fact. In addition to today's opportunities, we invite you to join this week's Design Field Notes talk (tomorrow at 10am) and wanted to send another reminder about support available while the Jacobs elevator being out of service.
Best,
Amy
*TODAY* Feb 1: Design Career Conversation w/ Leon Zhang: UX Design at GoogleWhat does it take to get hired at Google for UX? What is it like working there? Join this in person conversation with Leon Zhang, UC Berkeley (B.A. Cognitive Science 2017) alum and Google interaction designer for a conversation about his post-Berkeley career path. Hear about what life is like working on emerging tech at Google (and Apple and Twitch and Pandora — his previous employers!), and his recommendations for starting out a career in UX design. There will be plenty of time for open Q&A, so bring your questions! Pizza will be served; RSVP required. *Apply today* for Storyblok Design Charrette on Feb 11-12In collaboration with Storyblok, Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation (JIDI) will host a design charrette to imagine the future of websites and invites student participants to explore new ways of displaying digital content and new types of UI/UX.
This intensive, speculative design charrette (or design sprint) will take place Saturday, February 11th, and Sunday, February 12th, with presentations in the early evening of Friday, February 17th. It will be guided by Jacobs design instructors, Kuan-Ju Wu and Chris Myers, and Storyblok industry experts will serve as mentors and subject-matter experts. Student teams will be asked to explore future scenarios and how dynamic digital content and ubiquitous computing may change the ways we work, learn, teach, play and interact.
We invite students from all disciplines to participate, including upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, alumni, and PhD researchers. Participants are expected to work individually and in small teams to produce drawings, images, videos, and/or low-fidelity prototypes of their concepts by the end of the charrette. Student teams will present their ideas at a final presentation on the evening of Friday, February 17th.
This is an excellent opportunity to explore ideas through a design process and to generate a project for your portfolio! Outcomes from this charrette are also intended to become part of the creative commons or other open-source platform. JIDI will provide a process for participants to upload their work and publish using open-source licenses.
Applications to participate in the design charrette are due *TODAY* Wednesday, February 1st. Jacobs staff will respond to applications on February 3rd. Participation requires a commitment to being in attendance for the times of the charrette: Sat, Feb 11, 9-5pm; Sun, Feb 12. 9-5pm, and Fri, February 17, 5-7pm.
