FA24 CAMPUS MAKERSPACE CRAWL
Wednesday, September 18th | 12pm-3pm | Location varies
The event will begin at the west lobby entrance of Jacobs Hall
If you are interested in joining the vibrant community of makers, designers, and tinkerers at UC Berkeley, then join us on the campus makers’ crawl! We will start at the Jacobs Hall Makerspace and continue to other campus spaces. See the unique resources offered at each location and learn how you can join the campus’s rich ecosystem of hands-on creativity. Bring your curiosity and comfortable walking shoes.
We will visit the following sites, in this order:
Jacobs Makerspace (Jacobs Hall)
Mechanical Engineering Student Machine Shop (Etcheverry Hall)
Cory Student Workshop and Supernode (Cory Hall)
Berkeley Art Studio (Helen Diller Anchor House)

DESIGN FIELD NOTES FALL 2024
Please join us in welcoming another exciting semester of Design Field Notes. As part of our ongoing course DES INV 95, this speaker series invites a dynamic group of designers, artists, and academics in design-related fields to share their work and practice with our students and public.
September 11: Slicelab’s Journey Navigating the Design and Business World from Architecture to Computational Product Design and Digital Fabrication
Diego Taccioli, Compuational Designer, Slicelab
Diego Taccioli is a Principle and CoFounder at Slicelab. With a background in architecture and additive manufacturing, Diego has worked in various design roles for companies such as OPT Industries, WRNS Studio, KMD Architects, and Autodesk. Currently serving as Adjunct Faculty at Academy of Art University and Johnson & Wales University, Diego’s expertise lies in digital design, fabrication, and integrated product design. Educationally, Diego holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University, a Masters in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.
Each talk is free and open to all students and members of the public! All talks will take place on Zoom Wednesdays, 10 – 11 a.m. PT.
BCDI ALUMNI PANEL + COMMUNITY MIXER

The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation is hosting our first career event of the year: a BCDI Alumni Panel + Community Mixer on September 13 from 12-2pm in Jacobs Hall 310. In this dynamic event, you'll hear from four amazing Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation (BCDI) Alumni about how the certificate influenced their academic and career journeys and helped them get where they are today. It will be a great opportunity for you to learn about how people have leveraged their experiences in the certificate program to enter careers in design and product.
The panel will run from 12-1pm and will be followed by a mixer from 1-2pm with lunch provided. Jacobs Institute staff will also share about other resources and communities where you can deepen your explorations of design here at Cal.

Meet the Makerspace staff and other members of the Jacobs community at our Makerspace open house. We will have equipment demos, takeaways, project displays, building tours, and more. This event is open to all UC Berkeley students. This is a great opportunity to check out our maker resources whether you are deciding to get a Maker Pass, have one and want to know what you can do with it, or just explore the space with your friends.

Curious to learn more about what the Jacobs Institute has to offer? Join us for a building tour to learn about the Jacobs Hall Makerpass and get a tour of the Jacobs Hall Makerspace woodshop, metal shop and advanced prototyping lab. Meet our Design Specialists and learn about upcoming workshops and other opportunities to get involved with the vibrant, interdisciplinary student community that you can take part of at Jacobs.
Please check in at the Student Welcome Center, located in 103 Jacobs in the west lobby of Jacobs Hall. The entrance can be found next to the Etcheverry Hall breezeway. 2530 Ridge Road; Berkeley, CA 94720-1740. Drop-tours occur every 20 minutes within the hour, starting at the top of the hour. AY24-25 JACOBS INSTITUTE CLUB MAKER PASS APPLICATIONS NOW LIVE
The Maker Pass is a point of entry to hands-on making in Jacobs Hall and the CITRIS Invention Lab. The Jacobs Institute Club Maker Pass program offers Maker Passes to student clubs at a reduced annual rate (50% discounted from the standard Maker Pass fee) to recognize the important role of student clubs in the our community. In exchange, each participating club volunteers at one Jacobs event per semester to support the student community.
Club officers can apply for Club Maker Passes for the Fall 2024 & Spring 2025 academic year via this form. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until 100 Club Maker Passes total have been distributed or the final deadline at the end of September.

DES INV 198: Sandbox: Diversifying Design
Sandbox is a 2 unit project based design decal for creatives of any discipline. We bring a diverse group of students together to collaborate and pursue unique ideas that matter to you! We support students in developing their projects by cultivating a space of team work and critique. We will also bring in class speakers and hold interesting design workshops throughout the semester.
There are only 16 spots in the class.
