My Journey to be ‘Anti-Disciplined’: A Career Conversation with Zoey Zhu, Software Designer at IDEO
March 1, 12-1:30pm
Jacobs 310
RSVP here by February 16
The most difficult and fortunate thing about being a designer, for Zoey Zhu, is being passionate about too many things. Her work as Software Designer at IDEO touches on emerging technologies, generative AI, climate change, audio-visual storytelling, XR, and healthcare. Sounds interesting, right? Yet so many times when she’s asked what she does for work, she starts doubting herself and her path.
These experiences of self-doubt prompted Zoey to ponder: what if we could turn unexpected and seemingly-unrelated passions into our day-to-day design discovery? What if the very career and design paths we are pursuing allow and even require us to be multidisciplinary?
This career conversation is an exploratory journey into Zoey’s work with emerging technologies and also a manifesto on how to embrace and be comfortable with being multi- or anti-disciplinary.

Ryan Mario Yasin, Founder & CEO, Petit Pli Photo of Ryan Mario Yasin
Ryan Mario Yasin is the Founder & inventor of Petit Pli. With a background in aeronautical engineering, Ryan’s motivation to engineer a solution which reduces waste in childrenswear was inspired by his nephew Viggo. Shortly after gifting garments to Viggo, he learned how quickly Viggo outgrew them.
Children grow 7 sizes in their first 2 years on Earth and Petit Pli’s patented garments can grow bi-directionally to accommodate that growth. Petit Pli is a Material Technology company developing novel solutions in an archaic industry.
