Sheana Yu, Founder & CEO, Aergo Health

Sheana Yu is an award-winning Design Engineer, driven by a passion for delivering social impact and change through design. She has worked closely with the disability community to fully understand the challenges facing wheelchair users in maintaining a healthy and comfortable posture. Having lived with scoliosis (curvature of the spine) throughout her life, Sheana understands the importance of posture and was determined to create better solutions in managing seated well-being for people living with neuromuscular disorders. Her early prototypes gained support from the James Dyson Foundation, Royal Academy of Engineering and Innovate UK. This enabled Sheana to establish Aergo Health and built a team passionate about improving lives and making things better.


FIRST GEN/UNDOCU STUDENT ORIENTATION
Friday, September 23 | 12-2pm | Meet at Jacobs patio (south side of building)

Join us for our annual First Generation and Undocumented Student Orientation at the Jacobs Institute of Design and Innovation. This orientation day is specifically designed for first gen and/or undocu students; we will provide a detailed overview of Jacobs resources, courses, makerspace, personalized tours, and a free lunch. DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD 2023 NOMINATIONS (SEPTEMBER 25)
The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation is seeking nominations from students of DES INV course instructors that they would like to nominate for the campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) 2023

The eligibility and selection criteria for this award are described here. We are seeking nominations for DES INV course instructors only. 

If you have taken a DES INV course with an inspirational and impactful professor, please consider nominating them through this anonymous nomination form by Sunday, September 25th. Departments are allowed to nominate one instructor per year; your input will help us decide who that should be. Thanks in advance!


JACOBS WORKSHOPS
The Jacobs Institute facilitates a number of workshops throughout the semester, hosted by participating clubs, MDes students, Design Fellows, and our Makerspace staff. Workshops are a great way to become acquainted with a new skill, learn more about the resources and materials available at Jacobs, and connect with our community! Go here for full information and look out for these upcoming workshops in October: 
  • 10/7: Devilish Decorations: A Ghastly Lifecasting Primer (open to all UC Berkeley students, 141 Sutardja Dai Hall)
  • 10/7 & 10/14: RoboDraw (open to current Maker Pass holders, Jacobs Makerspace*)
  • 10/21: Take a Seat! (open to current Maker Pass holders, Jacobs Makerspace*)
*In-person workshops that use Jacobs Makerspace facilities or equipment are reserved for current Maker Pass holders.

Adam Bernstein is a cross-disciplinary designer, leveraging tools from engineering, code, and craft. His interest is in the evolving relationship between humans, technology, and society. In his current work at Google ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects), Adam is focused on designing novel human-machine interfaces


DESIGN CAREER CHAT WITH KAREN CHOU: CIVIC TECH 101 / UX DESIGN JOB HUNT TIPS & TRICKS (OCTOBER 10)

Curious about what it's like to work in design in civic tech and the path it takes to get there? Come join this casual conversation with Karen Chou (she/her), a UX Designer at Code for America with a previous background working in tech startups. She'll also give some really practical tips to help you in your job hunt. Note: You don't need to be pursuing a career in UX design to attend this talk! The information will be useful for anyone who wants to enter the tech industry in a variety of roles (ex: Service Design, UX Content Design, UX Research, Product Management).
