Dear Jacobs Community,

This week's newsletter contains some reminders about upcoming opportunities this week and over the summer, as well as a new opportunity that has limited spots--read more below if you want to join our field trip to Lumafield, a research and design team that has designed an industrial CT scanner and software for manufacturing.

We are also still welcoming student input on the reimagining of the Jacobs Student Welcome Center--if you have ideas to share, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey below; it only has 3 required questions!

Best,

Amy

Fill out Jacobs Hall New Student Welcome Center Survey!

Join us in reimagining the Jacobs Student Welcome Center (SWC), which will occupy two spaces: the west entrance lobby and Room 103.  The new welcome center will serve as an accessible, engaging place for students to get information, resources, and opportunities for exploring design and technology.

If you are a student at UC Berkeley, we would love to hear your input by filling out this quick survey this week. If you have any questions, reach out to Grisel Chavez.

*Tomorrow* Mar 2: Design Field Notes w/ Igor Galligo
Each semester, the Jacobs Design Field Notes speaker series invites a dynamic group of designers, artists, and academics in design-related fields to share their work and practice. Each talk is free and open to all students and members of the public. View the full speaker lineup here and subscribe to the Design Field Notes Google calendar here. This week's talk is:

AUTOMEDIA: For a grassroots media design revolution!
Igor Galligo / Visiting Researcher at UC Berkeley, Founder of Noödesign.org, Founder of Automedias.org
Thursday, March 9 | 10-11am | Join the talk with this Zoom link

Igor Galligo is a French researcher in philosophy, media science, and design, who worked for several years with Bernard Stiegler at the Centre Pompidou, in Paris. In 2018, he founded NOÖDESIGN.ORG, a think tank working on the relationship between digital devices and cognitive operations from the paradigm of general organology. In 2022, he founded AUTOMEDIAS.ORG, a platform that brings together researchers, software engineers, and political media activists to design a new information production model, based on a contributory design process.

*This Friday* Jacobs Career Trek to Lumafield
You're invited to join a Jacobs Institute "Career Trek" this Friday, March 17th, noon-3pm to Lumafield, a research and design team that has designed an industrial CT scanner and software for manufacturing.

The Neptune CT scanner allows engineers to see inside their work immediately to "measure the invisible."  The scanner rapidly analyzes products and can scan for part failures, find pores and cracks, and help designers and engineers make better product decisions.

Founder Andreas Bastian will share a bit about his very interesting career path, introduce us to other Lumafield designers there, give us a tour of their lab/studio, and demo their pioneering CT scanner (check out what their scanner does to ski bindings!).  P.S. You're invited to bring a small object to scan!

Again, the Career Trek is this Friday, March 17th, noon-3pm.  We will depart to walk to the BART station from Jacobs Hall West Lobby off the Etcheverry Breezeway promptly at noon).  More travel details to be sent to registered attendees.

We are limited to 20 students; please RSVP if you would like to join.

This is a great opportunity to network with design professionals working at the edge of emerging tech. Join us!

Berkeley Engineering Design Scholar summer research program
The Berkeley Engineering Design Scholar Program is a 10-week summer undergraduate research program for UC Berkeley undergraduates. Each Design Scholar is matched with a faculty advisor based on their interests, and conducts faculty-guided research in areas such as Engineering Design, Design Methodology, Human Computer Interaction, or Data-driven Design. Benefits of the program include a $5000 stipend, exposure to academic research, a free summer Maker Pass, and more.

The Design Scholar program will be offered as an in-person, on-campus experience in summer 2023, starting June 5th and ending August 11th. A select number of Design Scholars will also be able to participate in the Maker Launchpad as part of a combined summer learning experience.

The Design Scholar program is open to all continuing Berkeley undergraduate students in the College of Engineering, although freshmen are encouraged to wait until their sophomore or junior years to apply. Continuing Berkeley students outside of the College of Engineering with a track record of experience in design will also be considered. Student veterans, persons with disabilities, women, transfer students, and students of color are especially encouraged to apply.

Learn more at designscholar.jacobhall.orgApplications for the summer 2023 cohort are due March 26th at 11:59pm.

The Maker Launchpad
Would you like to sharpen your design and prototyping skills? Continue developing an idea for a project? Prepare for the Berkeley Master of Design? Or discover an entry point into the world of engineering and design? If so, the Maker Launchpad Summer Program is for you! This six-week comprehensive prototyping program, offered by the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering, is the perfect way to dig deeper into design methodologies and prototyping skills. The program runs July 3–August 11, 2023.

Jacobs Institute Hiring Summer ASEs
The Jacobs Institute is hiring Academic Student Employees (ASEs) for summer 2023.
More information about the available roles and instructions on how to apply are provided on the Jacobs website. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning immediately, until positions are filled. Before applying, please 1) review information about the course, including meeting time and content, through the links provided on the website and 2) ensure you meet the eligibility requirements to be an ASE, especially if you are applying to be a first-time GSI.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning immediately, with the goal of filling all summer 2023 positions by mid May.
