Dear Jacobs Community,

This week's Jacobs newsletter includes an announcement about upcoming upgrades to the makerspace, thanks to the Student Technology Fund, some upcoming events, and a reminder to students wanting to offer a design DeCal this fall that DES INV decal sponsorship applications are due next Friday, Nov 4th.

Note that the Design Field Notes event described below is for next week since there is no DFN speaker today. In lieu of that we'd like to share a multi-club showcase today hosted by Design at Berkeley.

Best,

Amy

ENCORE GRANT FROM STUDENT TECHNOLOGY FUND
We are excited to announce that we have received an Encore grant from the Student Technology Fund. Our technical team developed this grant application with specific technical acquisitions in mind: more consumer grade 3D printers, increased capabilities with our CNC equipment, and a panel saw for our wood shop to make breaking down large sheet goods more easily. Look out for these improvements, which are aimed at increasing operational capacity and thus improving user experience, in the Jacobs makerspace!

TODAY (OCT 27): DESIGN [SHOWCASE] AT BERKELEY
Design at Berkeley is hosting its very first Design Showcase where you will have the opportunity to learn about the project processes of different design clubs on campus in their show-and-tell presentation!

Date: 10/27
Time: 5:00-6:30pm
Location: Social Science Building 185

Hi everyone,

Amending my last email to say that there is a Design Field Notes talk today after all! Below, please find more information and the Zoom link for the talk, which begins soon, at 1pm.

OCT 27: DESIGN FIELD NOTES w/ SANG LEIGH

Poetics in HCI, exploring how technology embody through experiential design
Sang Leigh, Creative Technologist Samsung Research America & Affiliate Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology
Thursday, October 27 | 1-2pm | Join the talk with this Zoom link

Sang’s research and art practice focuses on robotic and computational tools that work together with human users. His vision proposes extreme synergies between machine tools and humans, with technology essentially becoming a natural extension of our hands. This way, he challenges the fear and criticism around AI and automation that they replace human endeavors, by showing how symbiotic machines can unlock new human explorations and aesthetics. Sang Leigh is Senior Principal Creative Technologist at Samsung Research America and as part of Samsung Design Innovation Center. He currently is also an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech Industrial Design. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Georgia Tech leading the Machine Poetics Group. He received his PhD from MIT Media Lab in 2018.
