RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

DE students Gabriela Paredes and Pranav Kuttaiah were awarded the 2025 GMS summer funding.

Gabriela's research developed a comprehensive framework for assessing flood risk in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region. Her research integrated seismic vulnerability analysis of aging levees with advanced flood modeling and social impact assessments. Her research aligns with GMS’s mission to address global metropolitan challenges by advancing data-driven solutions for disaster resilience, sustainable urban planning, and equitable community outcomes.

Pranav's research investigates labor intermediaries in India, and how technological change intersects with traditional social institutions (like caste) to reshape migration and labor markets. The research specifically aims to analyze how digital technologies, including social media platforms, job-matching apps, and search interfaces, are transforming work-search processes for migrants in Indian mega-regions. With GMS support, Pranav did primary fieldwork in Bengaluru, with systematic investigation of two distinct migration corridors: first, the local hinterlands surrounding Bangalore, and second, the Barak Valley in Assam along the India-Bangladesh border.
