GMS announces the 99% Invisible Power Broker competition!
In the coming months, we will be posing questions about Robert Caro's The Power Broker to encourage re-engagement with this classic on urban politics and infrastructure! The 99% Invisible podcast (more below) provides a fun and easy way to re-engage with Caro's Pulitzer Prize-winning tome. Those who answer the following question correctly will win a GMS tote bag: "What is the nickname of the Robert Moses lieutenant who mismanaged the parking lot controversy at the Tavern on the Green in Central Park?" 99% Invisible's "Power Broker Breakdown"
Many urban infrastructure enthusiasts will be familiar with 99% Invisible, the urban planning and urban history podcast hosted by Roman Mars, and broadcast from Uptown Oakland. This past year, the podcast offered a tour of Robert Caro's Pulitzer Prize winning The Power Broker. This classic belongs on every urbanist's bookshelf! The podcast includes episodes focused on different chapters, as well as interviews with luminaries with rich perspectives on the politics of planning and megaprojects (and NYC!), including Robert Caro, Pete Buttigieg, and AOC. It is absolutely fantastic and we encourage the GMS community to listen to it during downtime. To incentivize engagement (or re-engagement) with the book, we will be offering GMS tote bags to those who respond correctly to quiz questions in our newsletters. (See question above.) We also encourage you to check out other types of 99% Invisible episodes on themes such as the 15-minute City, the Los Angeles River, and the strange history of manhole covers.
