Dear colleagues,
NIST has recently deployed a public time server at its Gaithersburg, MD campus featuring an alternative hardware and software implementation. The hostname is time-f-g.nist.gov (IPv4: 129.6.15.25).
At present, only NTP and IPv4 are supported; we intend that support for other protocols (e.g., TCP DAYTIME) and IPv6 will follow. New capabilities, when available, will be noted in the table entry in the list of servers (https://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi). We are interested in observing the performance of the system under high traffic loads and so invite use. However, please note that the system is subject to further development activity. The new system's source of synchronization is the same physical cesium atomic clock (kept sufficiently aligned to UTC(NIST)) that synchronizes the other Gaithersburg systems, though the hardware interface is different.
Observations of anomalous behavior (involving this new server or any other) are welcome at internet-t...@nist.gov.
Best wishes,
-Jeff Sherman, Zach Amoss
