Good Morning Ballot Definition CDF Research Group!

I wanted to share with you that the latest drafts of the ballot definition and micro CDF have been posted to GitHub (as NIST.SP.1500-19.docx and NIST.SP.1500-20.docx). Additionally, the schemas, examples, prototypes and other documents have been updated to reflect the latest data model. See the following links to access documents of interest:

Are you interested in receiving comments on these documents?
If so, how should comments be submitted?
Are you planning on discussing the documents or any comments at all?

Thanks!

Hi Ray –

Thanks for the questions here. My apologies that the purpose of the original message was unclear. These docs are simply for the research group’s reference/awareness and are the versions that were submitted to NIST after the comment period. There are no meetings planned for the immediate future, but we may periodically engage the research group to collect your thoughts on various topics. I hope this clears things up!

Cheers.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. Somehow I missed your first reply.

When was the comment period, because I seem to have missed it!
--> Please provide the public statement of the comment period, and how it was posted.
--> What was the method for accepting comments?
--> Were there any comments?

I'm a little bit disappointed in this. I was trying to be a full participant in the process, and I believe that comments and a comment period are essential.
There are a number of comments I wanted to make on it, because I am intently interested in using the ballot styles standard. But in the past, your group
would not accept normal written comments in emails. So I wanted to make sure I was using the proper methodology. But now, it seems either there
was really no comment period, or it was not very well announced and I fully missed it.

You allude to the comment period, but when was it?

Thanks!

Hi Ray –

No worries. We provided an invitation to review the Ballot Definition CDF draft on August 12 and closed it on August 31 at 5 PM. The invitation to review the document was posted to the listserv (https://groups.google.com/u/0/a/list.nist.gov/g/cdf-ballot-styles/c/i6Q1tYyLUuw) with a reminder sent 5 days before the review period closed. You provided comments and edits during the commenting period in the Microsoft 365 document, and we were able to review them, so thank you for that. I hope this helps clarify things!

Cheers.

Okay, Let me ask you these questions then. I may not be fully understanding the spec.

1. Regarding Write-ins, the WriteinPosition Class is the thing that I see.
This can be included in the PhysicalContestOption class
it says it inherits the bounded object properties, which is the x,y,w,h location.
And apparently it adds the one additional attribute which is SelectionRequired, i.e. apparently whether a selection (of the target) is required to consider the writein information.

Is there another BoundedObject defined for a write-in which is the write-in region?
In other words, there should be two bounded objects defined for a write-in. One is the target location, and one is the write-in area.
How is that specified?

2. Is there a similar BoundedObject that is related to the contest block as a whole? I would be nice to be able to locate the contest on the sheet (x,y,w,h).

Thanks!

Good Morning Ray,

  1. OptionPosition is always required, even for a write-in. This is where you’d specify the contest option position (e.g. target). WriteInPosition is the area where the write-in text can be specified. If there is not a separate, target area, then both WriteInPosition and OptionPosition should have the same x,y,w,h.
  2. Yes, this is under PhysicalContest::Extent and can repeat as many times as required (e.g. if the contest spans multiple columns or pages)
