Tessie Shirley Pierce was born in Niagara Falls on August 29, 1923 and moved to Cleveland at the age of 5. The family belonged to the Cleveland Jewish Center where Tess became a zionist at an early age. Influenced by her brother who was in the service, Tess enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1942 and trained at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. During boot camp she was true to her Jewish identity by keeping kosher and attending services, the only woman at Camp Lejeune who did so.
Upon completion of basic training Tess was assigned to Marine Corp headquarters in Arlington, VA. She served in the signal division as a teletype machine operator compiling lists of the injured, killed and captured soldiers on the battlefields. In 1945 she met Army veteran Morris Garber who fought in eight battles in North Africa. The two were married on May 19, 1946.
In 1947 Tess got a job as a veritypist at the United Nations which at the time was headquartered in Lake Success. The newlyweds lived in Long Beach, bought a house in Hempstead in 1952 then moved to Westbury and finally settled in Jericho in 1958 where she still lives. Morrie and Tess joined Midway Jewish Center shortly after moving to Jericho and raised two children there. Tess enjoyed a 33 year career working for the Nassau Library System and was married to Morrie for 65 years until his passing in 2011.
