The League of Women Voters: Sharing Our History, Defending Democracy, and Educating Voters Nationally, Statewide, and Locally

The League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago by leaders of the women’s suffrage movement six months before the 19th amendment was ratified in 1920. Designed to educate and assist millions of new women voters, the LWV has since grown to become a non-partisan grassroots network and membership organization that seeks to support all eligible American voters. The LWV believes the freedom to vote is a nonpartisan issue, and therefore the League does not endorse political parties or candidates. The League works to empower voters and defend democracy in local communities by conducting voter registration drives, educating the public on current legislative initiatives, holding candidate forums, and promoting civic education for voters.

A women-led organization, the LWV encourages the citizenry to be informed, to register to vote, and to actively take part in American democracy.

This discussion will include a brief history of the LWV, as well as a review of some of the current initiatives of each of the four Suffolk County Leagues.
