Dear NYLA members,
ALA is asking for members to take action in support of federal library funding.
There's no shortage of surprises coming out of the U.S. Capitol these days. And while ALA's Public Policy and Advocacy office was on Capitol Hill with our advocates last week, we got wind of another surprise: U.S. House of Representative leaders have kicked off the first stage of the budget process for next year more than a month earlier than expected. So, help us start the fiscal year 2027 (FY27) budget process off strong by urging your House Representative to sign letters in support of federal library funding!
Here's the quick breakdown:
- Each year, Congress must pass 12 spending bills for the entire government, establishing funding levels for hundreds of programs, including the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), administrated through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program in the Department of Education.
- Congressmembers in both the House and the Senate draft "Dear Appropriator" letters to members of each chamber's Appropriations Committees, urging those leaders to appropriate the funding for certain programs, like library services.
- So, now is the time that library advocates need to reach out to their House of Representative member and ask them to sign the Dear Appropriator letters that cover critical library funding. More info here: www.ala.org/advocacy/federal-resources/fund-libraries
- This year, all Dear Appropriator letters must be finalized by March 20, so we have about 12 days to make this happen.
