Good morning,
We are seeking your help with notifying undergraduate first-generation students regarding the Gene and Susan Lucas Undergraduate Research Fund (funds for first-gen students working in STEM labs). Would you mind sharing this widely with your student and faculty listservs? This is really an amazing opportunity. Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Sarah Cortes
STUDENT AFFAIRS ACADEMIC INITIATIVES
Dear Students,
Are you interested in funding to conduct research in a lab?
The Gene and Susan Lucas fund supports undergraduate research conducted by first-generation college students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Please click on the application on our website to apply for the Gene and Susan Lucas Undergraduate Research Fund!
Student applicants will have demonstrated strong academic performance and interest in research. Funds will support conducting your own research or working in a faculty members’ lab. Applicants will have secured research placement with a faculty prior to applying, or this award could be an incentive to approach a faculty member.
We know that lab research can be difficult to complete during this time. The selection committee will consider a variety of skills needed for research, such as computation, analysis, writing, planning, literature reviews, assisting graduate students, presenting, etc.
Please contact Associate Dean of Student Academic Support Services Mark Shishim at mshi...@ucsb.edu if you have any questions.
Applications are due November 1.
