TRANSLATIONS

Good morning,

I'm donating computers to schools all over Haiti and have also developed
a device which we call our Internet In A Box ( HIIAB ).   It is nothing
more than a server which contains a LOT of educational materials,
including KA Lite.  Our problem is that KA Lite is available in French
but NOT  Creole.   Are there any plans to have a Creole version of
Kolibri available any time soon?

Hi Denny,

Thank you for reaching out. 

Coincidentally, I spoke with Ken Hexler (cc'd) from Bethel UMC Haiti yesterday about this. Our goal is to have Kolibri localized into as many languages we can, however, we haven't currently sourced any Creole translators yet, nor content in Creole for the platform. We would love to, though, so if you know of any English/Creole speakers who would be willing to contribute translations to Kolibri, please send them my way, and we can make that happen. Similarly, if the organizations you work with have content in Creole that is open licensed and/or digitized, we would love to hear from them and check the possibility of integrating the content on Kolibri. 

Also, out of curiosity, do you work with Adam Holt and Tim Moody on Internet in a Box by any chance?

Thanks for you prompt reply to me email.  Ken Trexler is part of our organization ( Bethel Computers For Education ).  We have been using KA-Lite for quite some time and look forward to transitioning to Kolibri when it is ready for general distribution.  We are also working with Adam Holt and others from OLPC.   They have received several of our HIIABs and we also collaborate on  Educational materials in Creole.   I'm regret that I don't have any Creole speaking people to send your way.  I am working with some here in Florida to translate some films from Medical Aid Films ( MAF ) but I don't think we can add your content to our workload and they certainly can't afford to visit you for translation purposes.  I wish that weren't the case. 

Thanks again for your response and we will just have to hope and pray that you find someone to translate your content into Creole.  Haiti wins the prize of being the POOREST country in our hemisphere.  That's why we are so dedicated to improving education in Haiti.  Your content in French HELPS, but would be better in Creole.

Do you have a list of keywords?

Have you localized in other language other (Spanish, for example).

We can offer voluntary work to translate to Haitian Creole, French and Spanish.

Hi Denny,

Thank you for your email and apologies for the delay in my response this time.

I appreciate the thought and completely understand. I just would like to take the opportunity to clarify that all of our translations are done online via a translation platform called Crowdin. We have contributing translators from all over the globe, so people don't need to be physically in CA to help us localize Kolibri.

In addition, the only content that needs to be translated is the platform itself, the User Interface. So our text consists of small words and sentences such as: 'sign up', 'next exercise', 'back to top', 'this user doesn't have permission to import content', etc. I'm sharing our translation guidelines here, so you can have a better idea of how we approach translations, in case you come across someone who is able to help in the future.
