Hi

I would like to participate by volunteering to customize the content in several languages in Sub Saharan Africa.

We are doing this for Discovery Learning Alliance in Kiswahili and Somali languages.

Dear dthige78,

Thanks for reaching out to us!  There is a clear distinction to make between Khan Academy and us at Learning Equality (makers of KA Lite).  Since we are different groups, we handle translations as partners.  It is through Khan Academy where you can do content translation.  They provide information on how to start here:  https://khanacademy.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/226315887-How-can-I-start-translating-through-translation-portal-

However, if Discovery Learning Alliance is interested in using KA Lite, then you'll have to go through Learning Equality's portal.  Information can be found here: https://community.learningequality.org/t/translation-to-different-languages/22

Good luck!

Warmly,
Carine

dthige78 (Donald?),
FYI I've been actively involved in arranging the recent translations for both KA Lite and Khan Academy in the last few years. It'd be great both to discover more about what you've been doing and what you'd like to do in terms of translating material for KA Lite/Khan Academy. I'd be happy to help introduce you to the work I've been involved in in terms of translations and both projects, etc. I'm based in the UK, involved in various projects globally.

All the best

Julian

Hi Julian/Yogish

We have been translating and customizing education programs for
Discovery Learning Alliance into two languages;Kiswahili and Somali.
These programs are being used in Kenyan schools with the main intent of
improving student participation and supporting learning of basic
literacy, mathematics and general knowledge. They cover a wide range of
topics; environmental preservation, mathematics, culture, science, world
history, current affairs, technology etc.

We also partner with One mobile Projector Per Trainer(OMPT) in improving
dissemination of education content using cordless projectors to
audiences living in areas where there is minimal access to or no
electricity in East Africa.

I am very interested in partnering with your organizations going
forward, there is a lot of interest in using already existing material
or content to improve learning, delivery in the classroom by teachers or
trainers and also to support education delivery to out of school
children.

By customizing the content, audiences are able to learn in a language
they understand, coupling this with dissemination through available
technology ensures knowledge reaches communities effectively.

I am interested in taking the discussion further and forming
collaborations where possible.

Thanks.

Yogish,
I've actually been involved in translating various materials into several languages. The main languages have been Swahili, Tamil and Kannada, however I've also managed to encourage various people to help with all sorts of languages :)

I'm also involved in various projects and initiatives to create and distribute learning materials, mainly in English. Some is aimed at helping teachers, others farmers, and of course some for learners, mainly pupils at schools.

BTW who are you and what are you involved in please? I know your name and guess from your email address you're involved in something called develop public schools. While I can google the term, I'd much prefer to learn form you what you're doing and aiming to achieve.

Ciao for now

Julian

Donald,
Thanks for the context. I met Matt York of OMPT (One Mobile Projector per Trainer) recently at UNESCO's Mobile Learning Week and am impressed with the work they're doing.

BTW: I don't have an organisation in the typical sense, I don't work for an Oxfam or Wikipedia, or ... (although I do run a small company and help many organisations) instead I've chosen to help other existing organisations, often in a voluntary capacity and self-funded (through my commercial consultancy work in technology).

Anyway, happy to continue the exploratory discussions on ways we can help accelerate progress for translations of educational materials, etc.

PS: The time may soon come where it'd be helpful to start a fresh email discussion if/when we stray a long way from helping translate KA-Lite and Khan Academy materials. Personally I don't mind continuing the discussion here if others are interested in the details.

Ciao

Julian
