The new instructions for getting java to work are:

Please verify the current version of java using by going to: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Please make sure that older versions of java are uninstalled.
This can be done by going to: http://www.java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp

With Java 7 Update 51 or later, you need to go
to Control Panel -> Java -> Security tab, click on Edit Site List and add the following to the list:

http://img.jgi.doe.gov/
https://img.jgi.doe.gov/

On linux, go to your jre/bin directory and launch jcontrol to change the security setting as above.
See System Requirements (https://img.jgi.doe.gov/mer/doc/systemreqs.html) for supported browsers. Some browsers may have issues with java.

These instructions (and any future ones relating to java) can also be found in the java popup by the title of pages that use java.

One thing to try is to check under:
Control Panel -> Java -> under Java tab make sure that "Java Runtime Environment Settings"
has only 1.7 checked as enabled (uncheck all others).
