Members of the School Board,

Despite unique individual journeys, dyslexic families often have similar experiences.  We have all watched our bright dyslexic child(ren) struggle with reading & writing, feel confusion and anxiety with how easily their peers can do these things, and frequently develop negative mindsets.

When dyslexia identification is delayed beyond first grade, these obstacles potentially limit life-long learning.  Delays are also more likely for students who can initially compensate or mask with other gifts and who require nuanced evaluations.

Once identified, effective intervention is essential.  Dyslexics need & deserve explicit, systematic & cumulative instruction that emphasizes phonological awareness & decoding skills like an Orton-Gillingham approach. Even better, these best practices could and should be substantially integrated into the core curriculum.

One-size-fits-all programs focused on fluency and comprehension like Parallel Universe are not the best use of precious intervention time for dyslexics.

I am aware of the investments LAPS has made in dyslexia screening, staff LETRS training and modestly updated curriculums.  These improvements do not go far enough and are only effective if they are utilized with absolute fidelity.

As you craft strategic & financial plans, please prioritize literacy, especially for the most vulnerable students.  According to NM PED, 58% of all students in LAPS are proficient in reading, compared to only 22% of students with disabilities.1  This huge inequity is preventable with data-driven instruction and policies.

Considering the wealth & resources of LAPS, I ask the board to not be content with current efforts or comparison to our poorly performing state education system but to be bold in resolving this untenable situation that is not consistent with the vision or values of LAPS.

Thank you for your time & attention.
