I am writing regarding the draft of the 2024 -25 School Calendar. I would like to draw your attention to the uneven number of teaching days with regard to semester 1 and 2. Semester 1 has a total of 87 days while semester 2 has a total of 95.
As someone who teaches multiple sections of a semester class, this 8 day difference is huge. Students in the first semester miss out on a week of instruction and curriculum. This is very frustrating for both students and teachers (core and electives both).
I would like to suggest that we move four of the professional development days that are slated at the beginning of the year into the second semester. Staff would still start August 1st and students would begin August 6th. The end of the school year stays the same. With regard to where those days could be placed in the second semester, there are a few options which I would be happy to point out.
Please please please rethink this draft so there are an equal number of teaching days.
