I was thrilled that the state passed universal free breakfast and lunch this past year, but I am highly disappointed in the lack of easy vegetarian options for the lunch. My current understanding is that kiddos must register with the nurse and need a medical reason for requesting a vegetarian meal.
Even if a medical reason is not required, given the number of families with religious restrictions in this town, this sounds like an administrative nightmare and an easy way for a vegetarian to go without lunch because their meal is misplaced. It also seems like it would generate a good deal of waste since not all kiddos will want to eat lunch every day.
For some members of my family, this will make school lunch no longer a viable option at all, rather than a free one. This is disappointing and frustrating, but not the end of the world, but what about those who rely on free lunch to be fed each day?
