Dear Members of the Los Alamos School Board,
My name is Met Haynes and my family and I live in White Rock.
I am writing as a parent and resident of the Los Alamos community to voice my support for allowing out-of-district students—particularly those whose parents are employees of Los Alamos Public Schools—to utilize the district’s school bus transportation system.
Our schools are stronger when they support not only students, but also the educators and staff who dedicate themselves daily to teaching and caring for our children. Many of these employees travel from outside the district to work in our schools, and in doing so, they choose to enroll their own children here—entrusting LAPS with both their professional and personal investment.
However, from what I have learned, the current transportation policies create unnecessary challenges for these families. Denying bus access to out-of-district students, even when their parent is an LAPS employee, puts strain on staff members who are already balancing demanding schedules. In many cases, it may even impact their ability to arrive on time or remain in their roles long-term. As a district resident and parent, I believe we should be doing everything we can to support those who make our schools what they are.
Allowing these children to ride the bus would be a small but meaningful gesture of support for our educators and staff. It would also promote equity among students, many of whom are part of our daily school community regardless of their home ZIP code.
I encourage the Board to explore options that could make this possible—whether through available seating on existing routes, priority systems, or targeted exceptions for staff families.
My family and I have supported this county thru sports and school events for the past 12-24 years. Not including the time we have spent here before having kids. I have also coached and supported many kids from this district and out of district , we are happy to have and help whomever if they need to catch the bus where we live in white rock.
Last thing I want to say is, Thank you for your continued leadership and dedication to Los Alamos Public Schools. I hope you will consider this adjustment as a way to better support the people who support our children every day.
Kind regards
Met Haynes and family
