On behalf of Council, I thank you for sharing your concerns regarding Urban Park as a location for additional tennis courts.  I have copied the County Manager so that these comments can be included in the initial site evaluation.

County Council and Los Alamos Public Schools Board,

Please consider removing Urban Park from consideration as the future site of additional tennis courts to accommodate tennis tournaments for LAPS.

Issues for consideration in removing Urban Park as a prospective site:

1.       Removal of young children’s sledding hill. The proposed site of the additional tennis courts at Urban Park would remove the upper sledding hill at the park. This sledding hill is a gentler slope and is much preferred by younger children. This is also the safer of the two sledding locations, as children who are unable to stop themselves do not slide out into the street, into parked cars, nor into a street.

2.       Removal of LANL students social center. This site also includes the sand volleyball court, which is the summer social center for LANL interns. LANL interns use the volleyball court daily throughout the summer.

3.       Lack of parking. The neighborhood around Urban Park is primarily made up of 1940’s duplexes, quads, and 8-plexes. These homes were built for single car families and do not support the existing multi-vehicle families that currently live in this community. The community was not designed for the existing level of traffic and parking requirements, and could not manage a tournament facility.

4.       Urban St / North Rd and Urban St / Diamond Dr driving hazard. The intersections at North Rd/Urban St  and Urban St/Diamond Dr are known driving safety hazards. There is insufficient sight distance along Diamond Drive to the north of Urban St and along Urban St west of North Rd for this location to support tournament level traffic at this location.

It is unclear from the proposal what would happen to the existing track or the open field or any of the other amenities at this location (dog park, playground, basketball court, pavilion).

Groups who utilize Urban Park throughout the year that may be impacted by changes to the park (in addition to residents and those mentioned above).

1.       Youth football (fall),

2.       Youth cheerleading (fall),

3.       Cross country ski team (off season practice location),

4.       Mountain Schools (Annual Fund Run and 6th grade graduation),

5.       Firefighters (fitness),

6.       Hill Stompers (summer),

7.       Community Winds (summer),

8.       Dog trainers

Please allow Urban Park to remain a community park that has a variety of uses for the many different groups in our community.

Thank you for your consideration,

Stephanie Haaser
