LAFSE makes excellent recommendations that should be followed if the masking mandate is lifted for LAPS, in order to mitigate the risks of transmitting COVID-19 in the classroom. LAPS should continue to collect and frequently review data regarding school and community levels of COVID-19, establish decision criteria for re-imposing a mask mandate if COVID-19 cases increase above an “acceptable” level, and provide support for parents and students who wish or need to continue wearing masks. This is a balanced, rational approach.
It’s particularly important for the school board to continue to gather data and maintain vigilance for rises in community levels of COVID-19. COVID-19 has not disappeared, and new variants, including Omicron B.2, are on the rise in the US. No matter how much we would like for the virus to just disappear, wishing will not make it go away.
