Large Gym Space in Los Alamos

There is such a desperate need in our active community for a large gym for both the schools and the community to use. Being part of the roller derby community in Los Alamos for the past 8 years, I have found few gyms willing to host our practices and events. Getting gym space in Los Alamos is difficult for community groups. School sports and Y programming comes before community programming making it competitive for the community to book space for regular practice times.   Additionally, the current gym spaces are not large enough to host the events needed by our community sports, like roller derby. It's unfortunate for our local community businesses, but to host regulation and sanctioned bouts, our local Junior Roller Derby league has to use a venue in Taos, NM.In the past we have also hosted our "home" bouts in Espanola at the Eagle Gymnasium and even in Albuquerque.  Having a gym large enough would bring more revenue to our town and have less competition between community sports programs for gym space, creating more opportunities for all. All community members and local businesses will benefit from a larger gym space.
