Greetings LAPS School Board Members and Dr. Steinhaus,

Respectfully, I request you reconsider your decision to open LA Public schools with the hybrid model and suggest a new survey among parents and staff to be made.

Regarding the last board meeting, survey data were shown to justify that the majority of parents, teachers and staff preferred to move to in person learning. However, if the collected data was analyzed by schools (MS, HS, or elementary), the results could have shown different preferences as follows:
  • Parents with elementary-age students and teachers in elementary schools are leaning toward transitioning to the hybrid model.
  • Parents with mid school and high school students and secondary teachers are leaning to staying online until the end of December.

Moreover, a new survey shows that our teachers favor continuing remote learning over transitioning to the hybrid model. https://sites.google.com/view/lapsstaffsurvey/totals-charts

Furthermore, there is concern between parents and staff about reopening in the hybrid model since many questions related to the hybrid model and safety have not been answered:
At this point it seems to me that the hybrid plan is not ready:
  • Two weeks before the elementary schools reopening (Sept. 21st), the schools are trying to finalize their hybrid safety routines.
  • The hybrid model has not been approved nor has been released to the public.
  • A public town hall is going to be held on Sept. 15th, which is just one week before the reopening.
Teachers and staff are who know better what is going on in the classrooms and the difficulties they can have when schools reopen. So, we should listen to them and show them that we really care.

As a parent, I also want to say that some of the comments that appear on the staff survey mentioned above really struck me and concern me, and they should be addressed.

We know that students and staff will inevitably be infected if they return to in-person learning before our district is fully prepared for the complexities of a safe hybrid schooling. I strongly believe that it is not fair to the teachers and students to change to the hybrid model under the current circumstances, and extending the remote learning is the best option.

Respectfully,

Virginia Olazábal
