I urge the school board to analyze the data from the recent publication of math, science, and reading proficiencies in the LA Daily Post by the different elementary schools within LAPS school district and explain these differences to the public. LAPS hires the same quality of teachers and uses the same curriculum across all sites but Aspen scores 56% in math proficiency , Barranca scores 59%, while Mountain scores 75%. These three schools are within 5 miles of each other yet this is a significant difference in proficiency . Reading proficiencies are closer but the science scores are either in the mid 50s or 70 percent based on which school is attended.
Are there differences in the type of student attending? If so, what are the differences? There is no difference in teacher qualifications, class size, or type of school attended. Please explore the data so that the general public can understand why this is occurring and what needs to change, All of Los Alamos county students should be proficient at the higher levels.
Thanks for your attention to this matter.
