Dear Superintendent Steinhaus, Assistant Superintendent Guy, President Ben-Naim, and members of the Los Alamos Public Schools School Board,
I am writing to you in reference to the proposed School Board Policy 4304.1. I have deep concerns with this policy as written and proposed. In particular, there are several sections of the policy that are vaguely worded and are unclear. This lack of clarity will lead to multiple interpretations of this policy and possible legal action.
As an educator affected by this policy, I am deeply concerned about the message that this policy sends to our staff. This policy, as written, will creates a climate of fear and distrust. For example, what does the expression of “other beliefs” mean? What is considered “disruptive to the educational process”? Reading this policy, it seems that our district employees’ private lives and their opinions may be open to judgement and possible disciplinary action. In our increasingly polarized culture, this policy has the potential to do great harm.
I urge the Board to table this motion and seek outside legal counsel and open dialogue with Los Alamos Public Schools staff members regarding the wording and implementation of this policy.
Sincerely,
Margo Batha
