As a student currently attending LAMS I feel students should play a vital role in the quality of life at the schools during this time. Recently house bill 130 has been passed in the state of New Mexico adding additional hours to the school year. It has recently been brought to my attention that these additional hours were not required unless the district accepted the state money and funding. I feel the board should have held a more formal vote for the families of the Los Alamos district and community .
Not only is adding more hours to the year cutting down on valuable time spent with family, but it may even affect the culture of certain students. I understand that some Los Alamos students have bad home life situations. But I genuinely believe time with family can be a tool for developing culturally, emotionally, and even academically . I firmly believe that learning is not limited to a classroom but a classroom is a limiter of learning.
Furthermore as a young man I understand how sitting in school for 7+ hours a day can be hard. As far as I am aware I do not have an attention deficit disorder. But I do have friends with ADD and the normal 36 week year (before schedule change) could be very difficult for them. I understand the district already accepted the state funding and cannot completely stop the new schedule. But I feel the board should host another vote before officially deciding the schedule for years to come.
Sincerely, Brigham S. Kuykendall
