Bottom line: What is best for our students? With a 100% goal as a main par in the strategic plan, that should be the guiding question.
It is always frustrating that these decisions have to be made with such short planning. I have 2 requests:
1- start now for next year. Start the conversations early, look at data now, find the root causes for attendance issues, because those will be tied to the calendar and start times.
2- Education exists to educate. Not accommodate family vacations, bedtime preferences, etc. Make what is best for educating kids the driver for these decisions. Use data to drive those decisions.
I know this is hard because you want to make everyone happy, but the people we are in charge of are the most important. We talk of resiliency, well, families are resilient. This community is resilient. If we never pivoted and tried new things then where would we be?
Please, do what is best for educating kids and we all will figure things out. This is a wonderful community that adjusts and supports our schools and changes amazingly. Do what's best for students and their learning.
