Dr. Steinhaus and members of the LAPS School Board,
I would like to echo the sentiments expressed by Lauren Coupland's summarized public comments at yesterday's School Board meeting.
Please join our neighboring school districts in explicitly committing to remote learning for all students for the entire fall semester. This decision will allow LAPS staff, students, and parents to focus all their efforts on the education and well-being of our students.
Rather than committing our precious resources to daily re-evaluation of whether today is the day to start the 4 week countdown to transition, please commit our resources to the LAPS mission. Please focus all available resources over the next several months supporting students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and community members in making the best of the online learning mode rather than asking and re-evaluating on a daily basis: "are we there yet?" and "is it safe enough?"
Not one single parent or staff member I've talked to is expecting the COVID-19 crisis to improve this semester; we all expect that the entire semester will be conducted online. Committing to a full semester online is the safest choice for all members of our community, and the logical way to help our children thrive.
Thank you,
Fran Gelfand
