Dear Councilors and members of the school board,
I am writing in support of the inclusion of a community gym as part of the Chamisa and Middle School construction projects. Our community currently lacks gym space of a sufficient size for activities that many of us, youth and adults, enjoy. I have been a member of the local adult roller derby team, the Los Alamos Derby Dames, for ten years and in that time we have never had a consistent indoor space in which to practice and play. This has led to us regularly canceling practices at our outdoor venue due to inclement weather and has meant that we often need to host "home" games at venues in Espanola, Taos and Albuquerque. These games bring players, support staff and spectators from all over the state and from many other states in the region. Los Alamos County is losing out on the revenue that these people would bring to our community by staying at local hotels and eating at local restaurants. Hosting games away from our community also means that we have fewer local spectators, which in turn harms our league with missed opportunities to build our fan base and recruit new team members. The Los Alamos Derby Dames, along with many other local sports teams would greatly benefit from a large community gym.
Thank you,
Rachel Adler
