My son, an LAHS sophomore, has an IEP and needs to participate in Academic Time most days of the week. I know he is not the only student that has a need to attend AT. I am not an expert in school policy or education law, so I am having trouble understanding the school schedule. Without AT, are students able to get their required instructional hours? I'm not sure how AT is optional. In addition, students that need AT are at a logistical disadvantage for transportation since the school buses come before AT and not after. All students that need AT are required to find alternate transportation. It seems so unfair that our district is set up this way. Not being an expert in any of this, I am curious how this arrangement is justified to the state. I know the schools are supposed to provide a least restrictive environment for students with IEPs. Not providing transportation at the end of what ,I think, should be a full school day seems to run afoul of that requirement and responsibility.
I know I am not alone in this sentiment as a parent and I have spoken with numerous staff that feel the exact same way. I would really appreciate an explanation as to how this arrangement actually meets all the requirements and maybe even a history lesson as to how this arrangement started in the first place.
Sincerely,
