I write this email as a resident of Camino Redondo on North Mesa.
I think the Los Alamos community needs more housing. As much as I personally enjoy many recreational activities in the current LAMS cross country course and proposed housing area, I can accept the loss of my personal needs for the greater good of the community. In that case I do not oppose the residential development. I also applaud the initiative to provide low cost housing to teachers.
Ultimately, I do oppose the project because the land belongs to Los Alamos Public Schools. It is too great a resource to lose for our public education. I think the project is moving too quickly and LAPS is not equipped to handle such an endeavor simultaneously while educating the community’s students.
I also think the relationship with the county is too complex. I am afraid all the good intentions will be lost in the end to the simplicity of straight up development with a for-profit developer.
I propose LAPS hold on to its land and let the county and LANL solve the housing crisis. If LAPS does not want or need the land, it should sell the land at fair market value and invest the funds to use later on for LAPS students and facilities.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Holmes
