School Board members,
Building upon last year’s presentation by the Los Alamos High School EcoClub and Chamisa’s GWE on electrification to the school board, I encourage the school district to participate in the NMEDD (New Mexico Economic Development Department) program described in a recent Santa Fe New Mexican article (Nov 28, 2025, https://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_news/taos-schools-join-statewide-electric-bus-pilot-program/article_e8f7e2fa-6f3c-44c3-a7d8-d240ae16bc32.html ). The NMEDD program is providing electric buses at no cost to school districts. Currently Taos, Las Vegas, and Santa Fe schools have participated. The school districts are able to test three types of electric buses. The program includes training for operators and repair staff is provided. Districts can request to keep one of the pilot buses. A lottery system will determine the recipients. After the two-year pilot ends, the NMEDD will invest an additional $15 million into more electric buses.
I encourage continued attention from the school board to pursuing electrification opportunities in both school transportation and buildings.
Thank you for your great work on behalf of our community and congratulations on the recognition as the NMSBA’s 2025 Large District School Board of the Year!
