Good Afternoon Ms. Bernstein, Ms. Guy, and Mr. Payne,
My name is Carolyn Bray, I’m a Junior at LAHS that is in 3 extra curricular activities, which would be nice to have breaks to limit the amount of absentees. Based on looking at the different calendar choices the one that had more opportunity to have less absentees at school would be calendar A because it has good choices of breaks that could help that.
Calendar A would be the good choice for next year's calendar as it chooses the correct number of hours for high school students while also having breaks. Choosing a good calendar that would work for everyone at school, calendar A would be the best choice because of the amount of breaks that are a week long, and random days that are teacher work days, so that students can have some of a break from school and not feel overwhelmed with the amount of homework that is being given. As a person that is involved in extracurricular activities, it gets overwhelming sometimes when I have to come home after a meet/game to do homework, not going to bed until 10pm, making me really tired in the morning to want to go to school. It also works with students who aren’t morning people, so there aren't that many absences and tardiness in first period classes based on the lack of sleep that students don’t get. Given that there are more breaks than this year it gives students the opportunity to have more flexibility when doing homework that could be challenging.
Students don’t have the opportunity to be able to have a summer. However, calendar C is also a really good option, the last day of school is in June. Students already struggle enough with having school end in May, so having it end in June there would be a lot of zoning out in class. Even though it would be a really good calendar to choose, there wouldn’t really be a lot of days in the summer for students to have summer jobs. Calendar A gives an opportunity for students to have free time in the summer with more days. Like someone that likes to travel to different places over the summer, it’s kind of hard to have that opportunity to do that when school is 9 days into the summer (calendar C) that would make it hard to go to other places besides New Mexico for summer break. Not only does it just feel like a lot of days but each semester isn’t the same amount of days, so first semester classes wouldn’t have the same amount of days as semester 2 to learn in class.
Out of all the calendars given, calendar A would be the best choice. However, Even though having 1140 hours in the school year would help with students that need the extra time to learn, in Los Alamos the test scores for science, math, and language are already higher than the state, so adding more hours wouldn’t really change that, that much, so having more spread out breaks into the school year and not having it just in one spot would make it more beneficial with the school specialty.
I am worried about what the school board is going to pick with the amount of not being able to be in all of my classes based on being in sports, and being overwhelmed all the time to not have a break in doing homework.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my ideas on which calendar would be really good for next year's students.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Bray
