Dear Los Alamos School Board members,
I am Gwyneth Lyons, a junior at Los Alamos High School. I would like to speak on the proposed extended learning time. Although there are benefits to the extended learning time, I believe that not implementing this would be better for our students, teachers, and parents in this district.
The COVID-19 pandemic was hard on many students, parents, and teachers, but I don't think extended learning is the answer for the Los Alamos School District. We are very fortunate to be able to debate this, but I think if this was implemented, it would do more harm than good. Mental health is a large issue for teenagers across the country, including myself, and adding more learning days would not benefit any young adults. School can be a central source of anxiety for children, especially high schoolers, so it would be very beneficial to keep the schedule as it is.
In conclusion, by not implementing this extended learning, you could help many students with their mental health and learning skills. So, please continue with this ongoing schedule to keep this school district healthy and happy.
Thank you so much for your time.
Gwyneth Lyons
